RUTHLESS RAFA AND THE AXE OF GOOD FORTUNE

That time of year has come again, when the season ends and Rafa Benitez has the chance to swing the axe, shuffle his pack, bring out the dead, and usher in the new. An axe: Because some will fall by the wayside. Ruthless: Because Rafa isnt interested in sentiments (like Dudek’s display in the Istanbul penalties or Bellamy’s goal in Barcelona), he deals with cold facts. And good fortune: Because the axe will be clearing a way for players from a bulging purse, that indicates they wont be young hopefuls (Like Patella) or fallen talent (Pennant or Bellamy) but the real thing (like Gerrard or Carragher).

This is my personal assessment of who will stay and who will go. Rafa says he wants every position doubled, and so, I will base this on 24 players, one extra goalie and two extra players (like Garcia) who defy labelling.

Player name
Games (Starts): — Goals: — Assists: –, Tendence: up/even/down
Next season: Team/squad/ bordeline/axe

1. Jerzy Dudek
Games: 6 Tendence: down

The hero of Istanbul had the chance to leave the club at the beginning of the season but chose to stay as Reina’s number two. Rafa’s opinion of him will not have changed. Whilst he welcomes the challenge to Reina, his ultimate decision will depend on whether he thinks Carson needs more practice, or is ready to take up the number two position. But Carson has pre empted that in saying he wont be coming back to sit on the bench. Dudek, on the other hand, says he has to move to get his place in the Polish team back. Thanks for everything. An Istanbul legend to rival Grobbelaar. Next season: Axe

25. Pepe Reina
Games: 51 Tendence: up

The breaker of Ray Clemence records, the anchor of the most miserly defence for years, and he is still only 24, which is very young for a goalkeeper. Despite the post world cup blues, I feel he has got better this season. Although he has no assists to his name, he giant kicks and quick throw outs have lead to many goals. Rafa has elevated him from a good national goalie to a very good international goalie. His CL semi final saves against Chelski are right up there with the best, and his best is yet to come… Next season: Team

–. Scott Carson

A young good keeper given the chance of a life time to play for a top team. He was courted by other teams, but he chose to go to a top team as number three. After a year out on loan for Charlton, he has since changed his mind that he is not prepared to be on the bench of a top team but wants to leave to play. Whatever I think of him doesn’t really matter. If he puts his personal progress before the club then he is free to leave. Next season: Axe

30. Daniele Padelli
Games: 1 Tendence: even

Only 21 and a giant of a keeper, the young Italian has filled in the shoes of Carson whilst he is away with Charlton getting more experience. The fans havent seen much of him, and his position seems to have been decided by the departure of Dudek and Carson. Indeed his first action in his first league game was to pick the ball out of the net. I hope that isnt a bad omen! I am sure he will relish this good fortune and take the chance with both hands, and he wuill only leave if Rafa brings in two new keepers which is doubtful. Next season: Squad

2. Alvaro Arbeloa
Games: 12 Goals: 1 Assists: 1 Tendence: up

Thrown into the team in an away game to the reigning European champions and he was like a fish in water. With Finnan having his most impressive season yet as a red, Arbeloa has arrived on the scene with a bang and will give the Irishman a run for his money. Not afraid to venture forward, he already has one goal and one assist to his name. He is also developing a good understanding with Pennant and he is also capable of playing left back and centre half. Next season, with pre season training under his belt should see the 24 year old impress even more.
Next season: Team/Squad

3. Steve Finnan
Games: 46 Goals: 0 Assists: 8 Tendence: up

Our most consistent defender this year according to league statistics and one of the leagues top performers. The 30 year old has had his best premiership season and has become one of the most accomplished right backs in the league. He was superb in the Champions league and kept many right sided attackers unusually quiet. He also roams forward more this year, and can produce a good cross, which is probably where his eight assists come from. Apart from his lack of goals, the only thing against him is that next season he will be the wrong side of 30. He still has a few more seasons left at the top though. Next Season: Team

6.John Arne Riise
Games: 44 Goals: 5 Assists: 1 Tendence: even

Last season, Rafa was so impressed with him, that he gave him a four year contract. This year he has spent most of his time at left back, and has moved into left midfield for difficult away matches. Whilst not having a bad season, he doesnt seem as good as last year. His form seems patchy. I doubt whether Rafa will show him the door, although the golf club affair wont help. His statistics of five goals and one assist says a lot. He can come up with fantastic goals but doesn’t supply many assists which means he isnt giving our attackers much convertible service.
With the kind of money available to Rafa in the next few years, he will have to get back to his best if he wants to keep his place in the team, and even the squad. Next season: Team/Squad

12. Fabio Aurelio
Games: 14 Goals: 0 Assists: 4 Tendence: up/even

Thrown quickly into the team after Risse’s early season injury, he has twice been on the verge of finding his best form when injury has struck (now for the third time). He became one of the best left backs in Spain and won titles with Rafa at Valencia. I am sure, when he gets a good run in the team, he will find his best form, and we will see him defending well, and getting forward and supplying the sort of crosses that have given him four assists in 14 games. He doesn’t score the goals Riise does, but he supplies a better cross and maybe that is more important.
Next Season: Team/Squad

4. Sami Hyypia
Games: 29 Goals: 3 Assists: 1 Tendence: even/down

The rock. The best header of a ball we have. Hyypia was the captain and king pin of our defence for years. At 33 people are begining to write him off. His pace, for one thing, is not what it was. But a player of his status still has a massive amount to do in helping the younger centre halves find their feet in the premiership. 20 games is still a lot. When used sparingly, Hyypia still is a competent substitute for the blossoming pair of Carragher and Agger. With Patella not ready to fill his shoes, and other areas of the team in need of replacement, I believed Sami would be kept for another year, but, with Rafa on the look out for a new centre half, either Sami or Patella will be released: On one side, I can understand him going if he wants first team football, but I can understand Rafa keeping him for experience, but now Agger seems to be fully accomplished… who does he need to teach? I think he will move on, but one thing is for sure he will never be forgotten at Anfield. Next season: Axe

5. Daniel Agger
Games: 39 Goals: 4 Assists: 2 Tendence: up

This has been a massive up year for the 22 year old Dane. After having a year to watch and learn, he has taken the big step into first team football, and as a mark of a good defender: You wouldnt have noticed the change. He has settled into a partnership with Carra, and has been tutored by him and Hyypia, and must be the best centre half of his age. With performances belying his years, three goals (one a scorcher of a shot and one a champions league semi final goal), two assists, the public have been made aware of him, but, with his two feet firmly placed on the ground, and his mind set on success, he wont be going anywhere except into the books of Anfield folklore.
Next season: Team

23. Jamie Carragher
Games: 49 Goals: 1 Assists: 1 Tendence: up

What can anyone write about this man that equates how he plays? A team of Carraghers, the most underrated centre half in the world, the world’s best, so why not England’s? A legend whose defending ability rival the skills of Ronaldinho in attack, and actually surpassed them at the Camp Nou. The unfortunate thing is we only have one of him. Next Season: Team

29. Gabriel Paletta
Games: 5 Goals: 1 Assists: 2 Tendence: up

Signed by Rafa as a very big talent, with comparisons to the best Argentinian centre halfs of all time. I wouldn’t say he has struggled, because he came to us NOT as the finished article. His progress is behind the close doors of daily training, so only Rafa knows how well he is advancing. I am one who doesn’t criticise any defender, in a defence playing together for the first time. I am sure in a year or so, if he is slowly blended into a stable team, as Agger has been, Instead of playing league matches with the “B” team, he will find his feet. Next season: Squad

20. Javier Mascherano
Games: 7 Goals: 0 Assists: 0 Tendence: up

Like Agger and Arbeloa, he has hit the ground running at Liverpool. At only 22 he has accomplished more in football that most premiership players will in their career. “The monster” has settled into Liverpool very quickly and is currently running the midfield as though he has played for us for seven years, not just seven games. A player that has added to the quality of our central midfield: Who would have believed that at the start of the season? And another young player who has a glittering future in front of him at Liverpool. There isnt enough time to say how big this little guy can become. Let’s hope he tells Tevez how good it is here.
Next season: Team

14. Xabi Alonso
Games: 43 Goals: 4 Assists: 1 Tendence: up

It hasn’t been a surprise that since Rafa made him boss of the midfield, we have won two major trophies and reached the final of a third. When he plays he is the number one danger to most teams, but they don’t always realise. If you don’t tie him down, he runs the midfield. When he clicks the team click. Gerrard can go on his roving runs, the wingers are fed, the strikers get chances. The great thing about this team is that we arent a one man team, but if we were…. And that is where the story twists. TIA’s resident Insider says that Rafa is not happy that he is resisting signing a new contract. The arrival of another young central midfielder could be more evidence that the Barcelona rumours arent just smoke.
New season: Team

8.Steven Gerrard MBE
Games: 47 Goals: 11 Assists: 10 Tendence: up

What can you say about Captain Fantastic? He is probably the greatest midfielder in the league. He is a charismatic captain. He has unbelievable skill, he has the unique capacity to turn games with vital contributions, and although we celebrate his successes, we only really know what he means when he doesnt play. With the aid of Rafa, he has moved from a good national player to a very good international one. His bulging trophy cabinet still has one gaping space for the one trophy that eludes him. But, with his leadership, I am sure that he will be the next Liverpool Captain to lift number 19. Next season: Team

22. Momo Sissoko
Games: 25 Goals: 0 Assists: 0 tendence: even

At the start of the season, along with Alonso and Gerrard we had three midfielders to match any other teams. He played vital roles in away matches, especially in Europe. He has been compared to a young Vieira. Again, he suffered a major set back with a second big injury. Since he has been back he hasn’t really reached his hieghts of early season. For me, he is in his element when we are under attack. But when we are more in control and he has to rove forward his limitations are visible.
With the arrival of Mascherano we have a complete player. Sissoko, although good, is not in the class of Mascherano. Since the end of the season Sissoko has openly said he has played and not played and played and not played and is not too happy with rotation. He wants a chat with Rafa. I think Rafa will not be able to offer him any better and I think he will decide himself to leave. I would keep him as a reserve midfielder, but if he wants to go, he must. Next season: Axe

32.Boudewijn Zenden
Games: 19 Goals: 0 Assists: 4 tendence: down

Rafa recently named him the Glue in the squad. The man that helps the whole squad to blend and stay in great contact. As the strikers will say about Fowler, just because some players don’t play a lot, doesn’t mean they arent important to the team as a whole. When he has been called upon he hasn’t left us wanting. His displays recently have even prompted Rafa to consider him for inclusion for the CL final. Some would say that was only because Kewell was injured and Gonzales didn’t live up to expectations. Despite his worth, he isnt a first teamer, and his age is against him. Although it is important to have experience in the team, people like Finnan, Crouch or Garca are old enough now to take over in that department, and his place in the squad will be taken by a very good youngster: Maybe the Captain of Brazil (under 21) ?
Next season: Axe

7. Harry Kewell
Games: 0 (3) Goals: 1 Assists: 0 tendence: down

As cheap as this great talent was, he came at a high price in terms of wages that he has never really paid back 100% in games. We have had flashes or the old Harry, rather than the constant flow of vintage Harry that the trainer and his wages demanded. To be fair, his decision to put the team first, grit his teeth and play on injured last year must be taken into account. And this is what we have reaped this year. At the start of next season he will be 29. If purely for financial reasons, Rafa would probably try to get rid of him, but as we are now rich and Gonazles has to be repalced, he will probably stay another season… But then, he will be free to go. Next season: Squad/axe

10. Luis Garcia
Games: 17 Goals: 6 Assists: 5 Tendence: even

Playing in a positon where it is your job to make things happen is a double edged sword. Garcia has scored spectacular goals in the most important matches, but has also been accused of losing the ball too much and maybe not tracking back. Since his injury I think we have seen how much we have missed him. Sometimes we have missed that creative spark. Will he be the same player after such a bad injury? We all hope so. Certainly, six goals and five assists in seventeen goals speaks volumes. Next season: Squad

11. Mark Gonzalez
Games: 20 Goals: 3 Assists: 0 tendence: down

Perhaps the most damning statistic is when a winger, whose job it is to supply balls to strikers, or to supply assists, has an assist rate of zero. Gonzales looked brilliant in Spain, but he has failed to come to terms with the English League, and has not what it takes to get around the average English right back. Next season: Axe

16. Jermaine Pennant
Games: 33 Goals: 1 Assists: 10 tendence: up

In contrast to Gonzales, Pennant has an assist score of ten in thirty three games. This shows the difference between the two. Pennant struggled at the start of the season, but that can be put down to the top players struggling after the world cup and not having a stable team to grow into. Since Christmas has seen his more and more on th right and with more and more confidence. Next season he will probably start at the top of his game and then we will see. Next season: Squad

26. Paul Anderson
Games: 0 Goals: 0 Assists: 0 tendence: even

Rafa brought him to Anfield as a young player with potential. He excelled in his first season, helping the Youth team to their first of two FA youth Cups. His second season has seen him cement a place in the reserves and win even more plaudits. He seem on crash course for the first team, but the usual questions apply: When will it be, and will he master the most difficult step up? Pennant needs another right winger to push him (other that Gerrard). The question is, will it be Anderson or will Rafa’s big purse allow him to buy someone more experienced and better?
Next Season: Squad (first or reserves?)

9. Robbie Fowler
Games: 9 Goals: 5 Assists: 3 Tendence: even

Words cannot describe what this man means or what he has done for Liverpool FC. When the team went walk about, and dissasociated itself from the golden past, and allowed the Mancs to steal a march on us at the top, there was one player who stood out. If we had had a team of “Fowlers” then we wouldn’t still be waiting for number 19. He had the chance to go to any other team in Europe, but he never took it. He stayed with the team he loved. That was not lost on the fans who named him God. How fitting that his last game at the club will be in the Champions league final. Although he wont be here next season, that is more a lose for Liverpool FC than for Robbie Fowler. And he wont be axed. He will be allowed to leave with his head held high. He may stop playing, but God’s don’t die or fade away, and what Fowler has done for LFC will never be forgotten. Next Season: To the hall of all time greats

15. Peter Crouch
Games: 30 Goals: 18 Assists: 9 Tendence: Up

The clubs top scorer with eighteen goals in thirty starts. The impressive record of more than a goal in every two games. Added to that, he is the clubs third best assist provider with nine. There is also his phenominal England goal scoring record, and the interest of other teams, such as Juventus, for his talents. Crouch may have took a time to score his first, but he doesnt look like stopping at the moment. That the latest Liverpool penalty was due to him being dragged to the ground by a panic stricken defender was unusual, not because it happened, but the fact that usually it is ignored by the ref, or given as a striker foul! Crouch is a very useful tool to have to frighten defenders with, he is 26 and coming into his best years. Even his heading has improved dramatically of late. Despite the 20 names of strikers flaoting around, I dont believe he will be one of those sold, but he may have tough opposition for his place. Next season: Team/squad

17. Craig Bellamy
Games: 26 Goals: 8 Assists: 5 tendence: down

For all that he does well, there is just something about him tht tells me he will be on his way. He is very quick, but not a brilliant finisher, he is a hard worker, but a moaner, he has changed, but then the golf club incident may just have tipped the scales. With Fowler making way for one expensive new striker, Bellamy will be the second victim. As strikers are ultimately measured by goals, eight in twenty-eight games is just not enough. Next Season: Axe

18. Dirk Kuyt
Games: 28 Goals: 13 Assists: 4 Tendence: up

They say that Ian Rush was the best defender Liverpool ever had. In that department, Kuyt can match the past master in terms of effort in closing down and chasing back. In front of goal he is not yet in Rush’s league, but then, who is? Without pre-season training his first season at Liverpool was hard. A new league, a tougher league. I think he has done a very good job adapting, and I think his first season will be a spring board to future success. He has found it hard in the tackle sometimes, but he always gives 100%. Barring injury, I think we will see a stronger, fitter, more clinical Dirk Kuyt next season. Next season: Team

VILLA LINE UP ANFIELD DOUBLE SWOOP

Aston Villa and Spurs are ready to offer Harry Kewell a fresh start away from Anfield as Rafa Benitez targets left winger Florent Malouda. The Midlands club are exploring the possibility of signing both Kewell and Craig Bellamy over the summer.

Liverpool hope to double their money on the £6m they paid for Bellamy a year ago, but Kewell, with only a year left on his contract, would be available at a knockdown price. The Aussie showed signs he is fully recovered from injury during the closing weeks of the season, but he remains one of the club’s top earners and Benitez is ready to listen to offers. Tottenham, who showed an interest in the 28-year-old last summer, are also considering a move.

Benitez already has the untried left winger Sebastian Leto in the bag, and Lyon’s Malouda is also one of the Spaniard’s top targets. Benitez, currently on a family holiday, is waiting for the green light to proceed on the Malouda deal, which would cost around £10m. The Anfield boss is hoping a move can be finalised before the end of the week, but that depends on confirmation funds are in place to make such a purchase. Malouda has made no secret of his desire to leave France. A member of the French World Cup squad, the 26-year-old has enjoyed a superb season and has been on Benitez’s list of targets for the last few months.

Also under discussion have been West Ham’s Carlos Tevez and Roma’s exciting Brazilian winger Alesandro Mancini, who Benitez tried to sign two years ago. However, before supporters get too carried away, the combined cost of this attacking duo would be in excess of £30m, plus the demand of a hefty salary, shifting the focus yet again on how much Benitez actually has to spend. Benitez’s one guarantee of funds will come from player sales, which is why players like Kewell and Bellamy would be willingly sacrificed.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth and Newcastle are hoping to tempt Sami Hyypia away from Anfield, but Benitez is likely to keep the Finn for a final season at Anfield. Mark Gonzalez, Bolo Zenden and Robbie Fowler are already confirmed departures

BENITEZ EYEING MOVE LYON MIDFIELDER

Rafael Benitez is contemplating making Lyon midfielder Florent Malouda his first major signing of the summer.

The France international left-winger is among several players the Liverpool manager is tracking as he prepares to radically overhaul his squad following the Champions League final defeat against AC Milan last Wednesday.

Benitez intimated over the weekend he expects Liverpool to make a major signing by the end of the week.

Malouda, who is available for around £10million, announced earlier this month that he wants to leave Lyon, with the French club’s chairman Jean-Michel Aulas having given the player until June 30 to agree a move to another club.

The 26-year-old was last week named the French league’s player of the year after helping the departed Gerard Houllier’s Lyon to a sixth successive title, contributing eight goals and five assists.

“I want to be sorted quickly. If nothing happens from now on, that would mean that the clubs who have approached me are not really convinced about recruiting me. If that is the case, there is no point in leaving. I don’t want to go wherever. If I leave, it will be under the best circumstances, for me and for Lyon," said Malouda, who is also a target for several other top European clubs.

Malouda has won 28 caps with and scored three goals with France, and was part of the team that finished runners-up in last year’s World Cup, winning the penalty in the final against Italy from which Zinedine Zidane scored.

Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin, Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and young Argentine Sebastian Leto will already join Liverpool in the close season. And the Anfield outfit yesterday confirmed the arrival of Hungarian teenagers Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon from MTK Hungaria. Nemeth, 18, and Simon, 17, appeared for Hungary in last year’s UEFA Under-17 Championships, and will bolster the reserve team squad.

In contrast, Peter Crouch yesterday insisted he was staying put after revealing Benitez has assured him he has a future at Anfield. Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce is reported to be ready to table a bid for Crouch, who finished the season as Liverpool’s top scorer with 18 goals. But Crouch said: “The manager has told me I’m part of his plans and that’s good enough for me. At a club like Liverpool there’s going to be competition for places, especially as the manager likes to chop and change.”

MARSEILLE CHIEF : LET'S KEEP CISSE

Marseille president Pape Diouf wants Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse to stay at the French club next season.

The flamboyant frontman, 25, has spent this season on loan at the Mediterranean club with a view to a permanent move.

After continuing his recovery from a career-threatening broken leg sustained in the build up to last year's World Cup, Cisse finally made his first start for Marseille in early December, scoring in a 2-1 win over St Etienne.

Since then, the Frenchman has scored 14 times in 26 appearances, including a brace in the dramatic French cup final defeat at the hands of Sochaux.

And the form shown by Cisse since his comeback has prompted Diouf to arrange negotiations with Liverpool now the season has come to an end.

He said: "I think in spite of the problems Djibril has experienced, a lot of people would be happy if he was to remain with us, and I think he would be happy to remain with us. The Djibril we saw at the end of the season is exactly the Djibril we went looking for at the start of the season. We have not been able to give a response to Liverpool because we had a season to finish and they had a Champions League final to play. They have happened and nothing can now stop us starting discussions with them. But it is necessary, first of all, to talk to the player. That is what we should do in the next few days."

Cisse joined Liverpool from Auxerre for £14million in 2004.

WHO IS "SNOOGY DOOGY"

George Gillett : "If Rafa said he wanted to buy 'Snoogy Doogy' we would back him. Rafa's feeling is we need more depth because of the rigours of the schedule to be competitive.

is he the " snoogy doogy "?

BENITEZ REVEALS THE PRESSURES THAT THREATEN TO TEAR LIVERPOOL APART

Benitez reveals the pressures that threaten to tear Liverpool apart

Another Champions League final last week may have been historic enough, but Liverpool are entering one of the most critical periods — maybe even one of the most significant weeks — in their illustrious history, according to Rafael Benitez. And that is without contesting a match.

The game, instead, will be played out in meetings, on the phone, by email and fax, with the manager warning that if his club do not win it, they will end up as Premiership also-rans.

Scroll down to read more:

Within minutes of Liverpool traipsing the disconsolate march of losers back to the Olympic Stadium dressing room after defeat in Athens by Milan, Benitez used the post-match press conference to launch a calculated agenda about the need to sign new players — and now.

By the following morning at a naturally subdued team hotel, where Steven Gerrard sat forlornly on the staircase, the manager’s force had increased almost to storm warning, his mood darkening with each interview.

Benitez repeated his message about the need for large sums of money immediately. On top, he even speculated key players like Gerrard and Jamie Carragher might look elsewhere if they are not soon locked into long-term contracts.

Indeed, in what is a risky strategy that could well antagonise the new American owners, Benitez painted a picture of a club superficially thriving, with George Gillett and Tom Hicks talking about grand plans and new stadiums, but, beneath that, desperately in need of leadership and a new structure if he is to get the players he needs to deliver the vision.

"They tell me they want to win the Premiership and the Champions League," said Benitez. "They can do it, but they need to understand the business here. We need to do things quicker than Chelsea and Manchester United.

"If you don’t spend money, change things, improve in a lot of areas,we could fight to finish fourth. The owners understand and support me, and say they will back me. But if we don’t change things we will not be contenders."

Benitez had meetings scheduled with Gillett and Hicks for three days at the end of last week. Gillett was even quoted as saying: "If Rafa wanted to buy Snoogy Doogy we’d back him."

Benitez, though, is growing frustrated by talk without action to back it up. He believes that unless things move quickly, he will miss out on his top targets, who could include Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o, Carlos Tevez — lately of West Ham — Sevilla wing-back Daniel Alves and Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa. Tal Ben Haim, the Bolton defender out of contract, is also believed to be on his wish-list as a squad player.

Benitez, off on holiday this weekend but with mobile phone in hand, will be ‘disappointed’, he says, if they do not make at least one big signing

He said: "We have the names to improve the squad but we need to do it. This is a crucial time. The conversations with the new owners are really good. They say: 'You can do this and this and this'. OK, I’m trying to do this and that, but when?

"I start to do this and then we cannot finish. It is something to do with the structure of the club and we must change it. If we don’t, we will lose targets."

Benitez sighed with frustration when he pondered the protracted negotiations for contract extensions with Gerrard, Carragher, Jose Reina and Xabi Alonso.

"Have Carra and Steve signed contracts?," he said. "I am asking you. Xabi or Reina?

"I was with Xabi and others after the game. We talked about the opposition, the tactics we had. It’s normal. It’s usually players like Xabi, Reina, Gerrard, Carra. They want to know you have good players ready to sign.

"We were talking about the fact that to renew the contracts of key players would send a message to other players, that we want to build a strong team. It’s the same when you’re signing players. If you bring strong, top-class players to the club, other players say: 'This team are going forward and growing’. But if we waste time, we can’t sign the players we want."

Gerrard, too, is on message: "If you look at the way we’ve performed in the league in the past couple of years, changes need to be made. But a positive feeling has been here since the takeover happened. The team will be strengthened, no doubt about that."

Michael Owen, it appears, is not on Benitez’s wish list, even if Gerrard and Carragher — and, for commercial purposes, the owners — might want him back. "All good players are an option," was the best Benitez could manage when asked about him.

Behind the Liverpool manager’s comments lies a power struggle within Anfield, with the usually understated but politically astute Spaniard seizing his moment. He knows the owners are not likely to sack him an that even if they did, he would not be short of offers, with Real Madrid having approached him in the past year.

Too often, he believes, he has missed out on top targets, above Juventus striker David Trezegu last summer and Serbia defend Nemanja Vidic, now with Manchester United, because the club were slow to act It is clear he has been at loggerheads with chief executive Rick Parry, not only over transfers but the pre-season programme, with Benitez unhappy trips to Holland and Asia in July have been scheduled when he wanted a longer training camp.

However, Parry may no longer be such an important figure, with Gillett’s son, Foster, lined up to take on a senior administrative role.

‘But he is not here now,’ said Benitez who, when asked if the problem was that nobody could sign cheques, added: ‘OK, you know. You are clever enough.’ The manager emphasised:‘I am really pleased here, with the supporters, everything. I have a good staff with good players working hard. But other top sides have good players and good staff and their structure is good.We need to improve in a lot of areas and we can’t wait until August because the gap will get bigger.’

Liverpool fell short against Milan due to lack of penetration, against ageing and unambitious opponents there for the taking. It all strengthened Benitez’s hand for more durable players than Bolo Zenden, who is going, probably along with Mark Gonzalez and Craig Bellamy.

Benitez has to shoulder some responsibility, too, for the current condition. Gerrard, for instance, is no Kaka — no second striker — and must be played in central midfield where he can see the game in front of him and attack space with the ball. And, having spent £100million in his three years with few conspicuous successes, the Anfield boss also has something to prove.

‘He is a great manager except in buying players,’ one coach in Spain said privately.

But with many other Premiership clubs in the market this summer, Liverpool need to reinforce fast, then get off to a good start and show immediate signs in August that they are capable of bridging the gap with the top two, let alone hold off Arsenal. They certainly need the lift of a major signing or two.

EVEN SIMULATION PICK UP LIVERPOOL AS THE WINNER OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2007

WIN! The UEFA Champions League with EA Sports

(Note: This article was picked up from soccernet.com, but I want to share it with all of you because it started my day with a glimpse of smile about how Liverpool gonna win tonight. As well as that, you can claim a game from EA if you submit answer for the question below. Check in the soccernet.com website for more details ... for now, enjoy the article, eat good, sleep well, and dont forget the final tonight ... because we're gonna be the 12th players tonight .. you'll never walk alone!!)

This week's Champions League final promises much. A return of the 2005 final in Istanbul, AC Milan will be out for revenge against a Liverpool side who have progressed all the way to Athens despite finishing third in the Premiership.

Milan's own domestic campaign has been hindered by the points deduction they received at the start of the season, but they have been in impressive form, particularly at the San Siro, in the Champions League.

They have the competition's top scorer, Brazilian playmaker Kaka who has scored ten goals from midfield, and will look to run the show as he did in Istanbul the last time the two teams met. It will be a long night for the Liverpool defence who have a tough task ahead of them to control Kaka's creativity and are likely to enlist the help of combative midfielder Javier Mascherano, in a deep holding role, to cover him.

However, Liverpool boast their own potent goal threat through the gangly Peter Crouch, who is the competition's joint-second top scorer on seven. The six foot seven inch striker has already ruffled some feathers in the Milan camp and they will be wary of his aerial prowess. While last year's hero, influential skipper Steven Gerrard, also has a good record in Europe and will put talks over a new contract aside in order to focus fully on winning Liverpool's sixth European Cup.

In defence, the Reds' will have to choose between the experience of Sami Hyppia and the young Daniel Agger, who has been in great form for them this season. The young Danish international should get the nod, having proved himself capable of stopping Chelsea powerhouse Didier Drogba in the second leg of their semi-final.

His partnership with seasoned campaigner Jamie Carragher will also be important in disrupting Milan's attacking play. Not only in stopping Kaka, but also the trophy-laden pairing of Clarence Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo. Milan will be relying on their own veteran defender Paolo Maldini to recover in time to marshal the threat of Steven Gerrard, while Gennaro Gattuso will do his usual wrecking ball impression in central midfield.

A 3-3 might be too much to hope for, but there are certainly enough quality players in both teams to put on a show over the ninety minutes.

With Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina in inspired form from 12 yards though, Milan will be hoping that the game doesn't go to penalties. The hero of Istanbul, Jerzy Dudek, may be on his way out of Anfield but Reina has shown this season that he is a specialist penalty saver and the Rossoneri will want to finish the game before it goes to a shoot-out.

After their incredible comeback two years ago, many would give Liverpool the psychological edge. Milan may be favourites after their dismantling of Premiership Champions Manchester United in the semi-finals, but if the Reds' defence holds firm, anything can happen.

We teamed up with EA Sports to find out what the result of the Champions League final would be if we simulated it with their UEFA Champions League 2006/07 game.

Soccernet
Gerrard lifted the simulation trophy, but who will get the real one in Athens?

And Reds' fans will delight in knowing that it was a 2-1 win for Steven Gerrard's side. Liverpool took the lead just before half-time, after Gerrard was left unmarked near the left corner of the penalty box, to fire a cracker past Milan 'keeper Dida into the top corner of the goal.

The Reds' then scored in the 56th minute through Xabi Alonso, who controlled the ball nicely in the six yard box, before calmly netting what would be the winning goal.

Down 2-0, Milan mounted a frantic comeback, finally getting one past Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina after Kaka was pulled down in the area and Milan were awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Andrea Pirlo buried the spot-kick in the top corner to cut the margin to one, setting the stage for a frantic final 10 minutes.

Milan fired eight shots at the Liverpool goal, forcing Reina to make four saves, but it was not enough for the Rossoneri, and after Pirlo wasted their last chance from a free-kick, they had to contend with another defeat to Rafa Benitez's side.

Of course, the real game may turn out differently, but we'll give you the chance to win 5 copies of EA Sports' UEFA Champions League 2006/07 to soften the blow if it doesn't turn out the way you would like.

ARE YOU READY?

PENNANT : I CAN BECOME THE ANFIELD VERSION OF RONALDO

Jermaine Pennant wants to become Liverpool’s answer to Cristiano Ronaldo. The 24-year-old has in recent months began winning over the critics who frowned upon his £6.7million transfer to Anfield from Birmingham City last summer.

Pennant points to the case of fellow winger Ronaldo, who is now rampaging through Premiership defences after taking time to settle at Manchester United. And the Liverpool man is confident he is now in a position to make a similar impact.

“I feel I’ve got the platform now to push on and have a big impact at the club. It’s always difficult to go to a new club and have a major impact immediately, no matter how hard you try. Not many players go into a big team and then in their first season get off to a flyer. If you look at Cristiano Ronaldo, I don’t think he got off to a flyer in his first season at Manchester United. It took him a season and a half to really show what he’s capable of. Now I’m here, I’ve got used to the pace, the players, the manager and how we’re set up and play. I feel it has set me up to really explode at the club next season,” says Pennant

Pennant added: “I’ve won nothing here yet, but when I win that first medal, hopefully as a Champions League winner, that’s when I can hold my head up high and say I’ve been part of a winning team. It makes you feel 10 feet tall to be able to say you've played for Liverpool. I was involved in a relegation battle a year ago. I know what it’s like to be at the other end of the table, so it makes you appreciate something like this even more.”

ZENDEN SET TO MISS FINAL

Bolo Zenden’s Champions League dreams could be shattered after he picked up an ankle injury at Liverpool’s training camp in La Manga. The Dutch midfielder, who had been earmarked to start against AC Milan next week, was on crutches last night and was today rated very doubtful for the final.

Manager Rafa Benitez has stopped short of declaring Zenden out of the running and says he’ll give the player as much time as possible to recover. But it now looks like the boss must reassess his selection plans.

“Bolo injured his ankle in training yesterday. He’s been treated by the doctor and the good news is the swelling is not that bad. We will need to see how it is after more checks today. It will be difficult to say he will be fit for the final now, but I won’t say no yet. He is strong and determined and it may recover quickly. I still hope he will be okay. It will be a big disappointment for him and for us if it’s not possible. Bolo can bring character, experience and tactical knowledge to the team. He is one of the good options for the left side, but now we must see how he recovers and decide what to do,” said Benitez.

Zenden’s misfortune may open the door for Harry Kewell to complete an extraordinary return, although Benitez is more inclined to use the Aussie from the bench. His only other alternative is Mark Gonzalez, although he could push John Arne Riise into a more advanced role. Meanwhile, Pepe Reina has recovered from the shoulder injury he suffered recently and will be fit to start in Athens.

CROUCH AND GERRARD MUST BE STOPED

Paolo Maldini has pinpointed Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard as the main threat to AC Milan lifting a seventh European Cup in Athens. And the veteran defender is confident he will be able to play in a record-breaking eighth Champions League final next Wednesday.

A niggling knee injury has cast a shadow over the 38-year-old’s participation in the showdown with Liverpool, a re-run of the 2005 final. But a specialised training programme means the left-back – who scored Milan’s opener two years ago – should be fit to lead his team out in search of a fifth European Cup winners medal having won the trophy with Milan in 1989, 1990, 1994 and 2003. And he believes the primary danger will come from Liverpool skipper Gerrard and Crouch, who is second only to Milan’s Kaka in the goalscoring charts for this season’s competition.

“It is the biggest game of the season. To play a final fills you with pride and to do so as the captain for a third time really makes me proud. The fact we are playing Liverpool again could be seen as our vendetta, but we have nothing personal against them. I think we have got to not think about the opponent too much but concentrate on what Milan know how to do and then accept the result at the end of it,” he said

Maldini added: “I think we have to watch out for (Steven) Gerrard and (Peter) Crouch. Gerrard because of the way he gets into good positions and Crouch because of his height, but then danger could come from anybody. I would say we are two teams with winning traditions.”

Of his own fitness, Maldini said: “I am feeling well. I am preparing myself well physically and I think in that department, Milan lead the way.”

HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

All thoughts have been on Athens for a while now and we all have opinions on who should play and how we will beat Milan.

It will undoubtedly be a much tighter game than two years ago and it's vital that we keep Kaka tightly marked and don't give anything away early on. Javier Mascherano looks the ideal man for the job of shackling Kaka with his energy and tackling and if we can restrict his input they will struggle to create chances.

The last thing we want is a repeat of what went wrong in the first half in the final of 2005. The back four and goalkeeper will be in keeping with what has been selected in the previous knockout games, but the midfield will require a lot more thought. I hope Rafa can accommodate Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano in the midfield while still maintaining some width in the side.

The pace of Jermaine Pennant could also cause Milan problems and a late introduction from the bench could pay dividends. The performance of Harry Kewell against Charlton has also caused a re-think with his ability to create chances and score goals a great attribute.

Our path to the final has been very much a team effort, while Kaka has dragged Milan there almost single-handedly. If we can rattle the Italians, the psychological scars of 2005 could prove too much for them. All in all it's going to take a great effort to win but, with Milan desperate for revenge, if we score first they may well become frustrated and one goal could be enough to see the trophy return to Anfield.

I’d start with Kuyt and Crouch up front, go with Gerrard in the middle alongside Mascherano, who could be the man to tame Kaka. Ronaldinho, Messi, Deco and Drogba have all came out second best against our defence this season. Adding the Brazilian to that illustrious list will be the key to ensuring the European Cup returns to Anfield for a phenomenal sixth time.

REDS NOT AN ENGLISH TEAM

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has branded Liverpool the worst English team to reach this season’s Champions League semi-finals.

And he has described a Reds team of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as “a Mediterranean team which lacks the DNA of the English”.

Ancelotti’s curious critique has turned up the heat ahead of next week’s Athens final. The Milan coach said: “On a technical level, they are the worst of the three English teams to reach this season’s semi-finals. But that does not mean I would have chosen to be playing them in next week’s final. I would have preferred Manchester United. That’s partly because we got a view of them in the semi-final both at Old Trafford and San Siro and partly because they are a technical squad who play and let you play. I don’t get the feeling that will be the case with Liverpool.”

Ancelotti declared that the Reds have lost touch with their roots under Benitez. He said: “Milan will always have a strong Italian quality because, even with foreigners like Kaka and Seedorf, we remain true to our influences, philosophy and beliefs. But Liverpool don't have an English DNA any more. They are more like a Mediterranean team and that comes from their coach.”

Ancelotti has been boosted by the availability of captain Paolo Maldini.

Prev: Gonzalez attracts Spanish interest

GONZALEZ ATTRACTS SPANISH INTEREST

Mark Gonzalez could be heading for a swift return to La Liga after the Champions League final as a host of Spanish clubs are showing interest in the winger. The 22-year-old Chilean has struggled to make an impact in the Premiership following his arrival from Real Sociedad last summer.

There were high hopes the South American would solve Liverpool’s long standing problems on the left of midfield, but despite countless opportunities, it’s been an erratic debut campaign in England.

Now Real Betis are believed to be among those showing an interest in taking the youngster back to Spain, where he originally shone for Albacete, prompting his much delayed £2.5m transfer to the Reds.

Manager Rafa Benitez has been pondering whether to allow Gonzalez to leave or give him one more chance to shine next season. Benitez is weighing up whether the Chilean will have benefited from his first season at Anfield and can massively improve, or whether the last eight months are a sign he’s not up to the level of a club of Liverpool’s size.

It’s a sign of how Gonzalez has missed his opportunities when long term absentee Harry Kewell seems to have moved above him in the battle to win a place on the bench in Athens.

Gonzalez admits he faces an uncertain future, but is hopeful he’ll still be at the club beyond the summer. "I have a three-year contract but you never know what might happen. This is football and if I have to go somewhere else then I will have to deal with that, but at the moment I'm here and I'm very focused for the final and what happens in the future will come. If I have to go then I will go but I will arrive there with confidence because I have been at Liverpool and I must have been there for something. But I would like to stay at Liverpool next season and beyond," he acknowledged.

Gonzalez can at least console himself with the fact his winning goal against Maccabi Haifa in last August’s Champions League qualifier set Liverpool on the path to Athens. But since then, there have been few personal highlights.

“It has not been the best year for me and I know I can do more,” he said.

REVENGE NOT ON AGENDA INSISTS KAKA

AC Milan playmaker Kaka insists that the Rossoneri are not being fuelled by revenge, but admits they do fear one man – Steven Gerrard.

The sides meet next week in a repeat of the 2005 final that saw the Reds come from 3-0 down at half-time to win on penalties. Memories of that night in Istanbul still haunt Milan, and there have been suggestions that Carlo Ancelotti's team will be consumed by a revenge mission in Athens.

However, Champions League top-scorer Kaka believes the Serie A giants will purely be focused on bringing a seventh European Cup back to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“For me the motivation is to once again get to a final, and have the possibility of winning the Champions League. Everyone is talking about a revenge for what happened in 2005. It happened, we lost that final and Liverpool were the champions. It will always be remembered that way so we have the opportunity to once again make our mark on history,” Kaka said.

While Kaka is clearly Milan's inspiration and stand-out performer this season, Liverpool have their own star in captain Steven Gerrard. Kaka praised his opposite number, saying: “He is an excellent player. He is a modern player because he runs, marks, knows how to pass, cross, score goals and he is a leader on the field for Liverpool. So he is a player that I would like to have in my team.”

Ancelotti, meanwhile, says he would prefer Gerrard to line up in the centre of midfield next week. Benitez has been criticised at times for playing Gerrard in a wide right position where he is perceived to be less effective. But Ancelotti insists the Reds are weaker with Gerrard in the centre. “When Steven Gerrard is in the middle, Liverpool are less solid in the centre of midfield. But when he goes wide and Xabi Alonso is in the centre, then they are more protected. I would prefer to face the first option,” he said.

BENITEZ SLAMS VALDANO TALK

Rafa Benitez today launched a furious attack on Real Madrid’s former technical director Jorge Valdano after Liverpool’s style of play was criticised in Spain.

Argentinian Valdano, who left Real in 2005, claimed last week Liverpool fans would acclaim ‘sh*t hanging off a stick’ following their semi-final win over Chelsea. Jose Mourinho was also targeted by Valdano, who is scathing of the tactics over both legs of the European tie.

Benitez was clearly unimpressed by the comments. “The people at this club who are working to obtain the targets we are achieving deserve respect, a deep respect. I believe that he has shown a lack of respect to the club and the fans and the sacred stage of Anfield. Speaking of “sh*t hanging from a stick” and other unfair comparisons show he has absolutely no knowledge of the historical reality of this organisation in world football. I have known Jorge Valdano for more than 20 years since my time at Real Madrid and I do not have the best professional concept of him. I believe that he has much to thank to people like Ramon Martinez, Cappa or Giraldez, to mention only some examples, of trainers or sporting directors he’s worked like. These are people who have made a bigger contribution. It infuriates to me that a person who has the privilege of being able to express himself in the media does not do so with honour and education and does not show, I repeat, the minimum respect to an institution like Liverpool, with it’s success and history,” said Benitez.

Valdano had claimed: “Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion and in that Anfield is unbeatable. Put sh** hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate crazy stadium, and there are people who will tell you it’s a work of art. It’s not. It’s sh** hanging from a stick. Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest and most exaggerated example of the way football is going - very intense, very tactical, very physical and very direct.”

ATHENS (ISTANBUL II): LIVERPOOL vs AC MILAN

Inilah pertandingan pamungkas, pertandingan yang paling dinanti, satu-satunya gelar yang bisa diraih di musim ini...

Athens (Istanbul II): LIVERPOOL vs AC Milan

Liverpool 18x juara, sedangkan AC Milan 17x juara.

Tembok kokoh Jamie Carragher vs oportunistis Pippo Inzaghi/Alberto Gillardino. Komposer harmonisasi ritme permainan serta pematah serangan lawan ala Xabi Alonso/Javier Mascherano vs kehandalan talenta alam Kaka dan pengalaman segudang Clarence Seedorf. Adu urat syaraf, otot, dan intelegensia 2G bernomor 8: Gerrard vs Gattuso. Kinerja keras tanpa kendur ala Dirk Kuyt vs ketajaman visi Andrea Pirlo.

......Mari satukan prediksi, optimisme obyektif, harapan, dan do'a kita semua di sini. Di Olympic Stadium-Athens The 12th Men akan kembali jadi faktor penting dalam perjuangan Liverpool meraih bintang yang ke-6 untuk menyamai raihan bintang sekaligus mengalahkan tim sarat talenta dan pengalaman, AC Milan. Amiiiiiin. And...We're, BIG REDS! , are The 12th Men of LIVERPOOL F.C.!!
