BENITEZ' BENT BID

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is planning a bid for Charlton Athletic striker Darren Bent.

Armed with a summer transfer budget of £40 million, Benitez has been linked with a host of European-based stars.

However, the Mirror says dollar-rich Liverpool's first signing may well come from much closer home - Charlton and England forward Bent, who would cost around £15 million.

Editor's Notes

Rafa Benitez is reportedly considering a bid for Addicks' captain, Darren Bent.

This speculations came about as ChelSKeA are made clear favourites to land Valencia's David Villa. Valencia has slapped an audaciuos £70 million price-tag on the player but the Blues are believed to be putting £40 million on the table, an amount which I reckon is madness and one that Liverpool would not counter to.

Also with Samuel Eto'o publicly claiming that he wants to stay at Camp Nou, Rafa has perhaps added Bent onto the list of his possibilities. There has also been calls for Rafa to maintain the core of English players in his squad.

Certainly the 23 year-old is worth the consideration, with his blistering pace and an eye for goal. An old fashioned English forward some might say, at times single-handedly lifted Charlton to winning games. Being made the captain says a lot about his character and leadership qualities. Bent has built quite a reputation in the EPL and he can only get better.

Charlton have so far resisted any approach for him but even if Alan Pardew manage to steer them away from relegation, I reckon Bent is destined to leave come season end.
