SCOTTISH SENSATIONAL SIGNS

Sixteen year-old Scottish midfielder Gary Mackay Steven has today signed a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool FC, taking him to Anfield for the start of the 2007/8 season.

Steven will join Liverpool’s Academy when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The youngster is widely recognised as one of the most promising talents north of the border and will sign a two-year contract with Rafa Benitez's side on July 1st.

Despite only being sixteen, Gary has been an important member of the outstanding Ross County Under-19 side this season and he scored in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Youth Cup in the 3-2 home win over Hibernian in the middle of February, rewarding County with a semi-final against Glasgow Rangers. Gary also scored in the recent 3-2 League win over Berwick Rangers.

Gary was understandably delighted with the prospect of moving to one of Europe's biggest clubs in the summer, said: "I am very much looking forward to it. It will be a big challenge for me, but one that I believe I can handle."

"We look forward to seeing him light up the Premiership in the coming years," a spokesman for the Scottish First Division side told Liverpool’s official website."

"Gary has always been willing to put in the hard work and training to go alongside his exceptional natural skill."

Editor's Notes

Liverpool have finally won the race for Scottish young sensation Gary Steven, it was reported.

He has been the talked of the town after being scouted by several clubs and has impressed everyone of them. It was initially thought that Glasgow Celtic have managed to convince the youngster into staying in his homeland but it turns out that he eventually signed a pre-contract with Liverpool. It has been speculated that ChelSKeA, Mancs and even Barca are among the clubs trying to entice him. I imagine that Kenny Dalglish might have played an important role in this acquisition.

Steven, still only 16, has been compared to a young Steven Gerrard. But he is still not the 'finished product' as yet. Liverpool need to groom and assist him in his progress and who knows, he might be the eventual successor to our Stevie G.
