RAUL SPECULATIONS

Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez could be set for a shock switch to the Premiership this summer with Liverpool the most likely destination.

DiarioSport says Real president Ramon Calderon is considering shipping out the fans favourite as a new generation of stars are set to take over at the club. Following the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, Fernando Gago and Marcelo in January, Calderon is keen to continue to overhaul the entire Real squad in an attempt to restore its position as the number one club in Europe.

Raul is a personal friend of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and has made regular trips to Anfield since the Spaniard took control of the Premiership club and with a huge transfer kitty to spend this summer, Benitez could be tempted to make Raul part of his Liverpool revolution. The Liverpool boss is believed to be keen on signing the Real Madrid striker this summer.

The News of the World says Benitez has been tipped off Real's skipper will be sold at a cut-price £5 million at the end of the season.

And the Kop boss is in pole position to snap up the striker, who has been revered by Bernabeu fans for the last seven years.

A Madrid source revealed: "Real president Ramon Calderon is starting to think it is time to overhaul the squad and bring in younger and fresher players."

Raul's agent, Gines Carvajal, declared: "If he leaves Real his destination would be easy to choose. It would be England."

Editor's Notes

Seems that Liverpool will always be linked with any high profile want-away players of the La-Liga.

But personally I feel that Liverpool could do without an egocentric 'big-time Charlie' and create an unnecessary unrest in the squad. Raul has been with the Galacticos since 1994 and has endeared himself to the supporters there who deemed him as 'untouchable.

He has been rumoured to exert so much influence with the fans and the boardroom staffs that it is unthinkable for a manager to have him dropped. Many has tried and face the consequences.

At 29, Raul probably have 2-3 good years in him but he is not known to be a hardworking player and he will definitely have difficulty settling into the EPL. It would be similar to that of the acquisition of Fernando Morientes who failed to discover his goalscoring touch in the EPL.

Being a personal friend to Rafa could do more damage then good. It could end up in similar fashion to that of Roman Abramovic and Andriy Shevchenko with endless unrest among players.

But at a cut-price of £5 million, perhaps Rafa feels that its an opportunity too good to let past. Rafa knows best and if he feels that it is to the benefit of Liverpool FC, we should leave the judgement much later.
